Our Academic Decathlon team consists of nine students: Three "Honors" (GPA 3.75-4.0), three "Scholastic" (GPA 3.00-3.74), and three "Varsity" (GPA 0.00-2.99). All nine students write six tests in the local competition. The two highest scoring students in each division will be counted for the six-person team score. If the team is one of the top 72 teams in the state, it will advance to the regional competition. Prior to the regional competition (in early December), students write an essay addressing a theme from the year's novel and how it applies to their lives. The regional competition includes a speech and an interview in front of a panel of judges and also includes the six multiple choice tests.
The Academic Decathlon competition is comprised of ten events. There are seven multiple-choice exams—one in each of the following subject areas:
· art
· economics
· language and literature
· mathematics
· music
· science
· social science
Each year, one of the topics is covered in the Super Quiz which is an oral relay portion (quiz bowl format) with a written exam. Students also write an essay and are judged in a speech event as well as an interview. The multiple choice exams each have 50 questions worth 20 points each except for math which has 25 questions at 40 points each—for a total of 1000 points for each of the multiple choice topics.
The language & literature section requires reading one or more novels plus numerous pieces of poetry and other literature. Each of these items must be read and the contents analyzed—this is college-level work. The other areas of study require similar levels of work and dedication.
