Pete von Allmen
Many female basketball players have Pete von Allmen to thank for a collegiate basketball career. During his time as head coach of the AHS girls basketball program, 29 players went on to play college basketball, with 13 receiving full scholarships.
Coach von Allmen knew how to build players and teams and is known as one of the most successful high school girls basketball coaches in Wisconsin history. He was elected to the WBCA Hall of Fame in 2004.
While at AHS, Coach von Allmen’s teams won state championships in 1988 and 1991, and made six state tournament appearances – five consecutively from 1987 to 1991.
For 17 years, Coach von Allmen mentored AHS players and achieved an impressive 319 wins, 72 losses (81%). His teams captured:
- 12 Conference championships
- 11 Regional titles
- 8 Sectional runner-up awards
- 6 Sectional championships (leading to 6 State appearances)
- 2 Division 1 State championships
In 1988 and 1991, Coach von Allmen was named the Associated Press State Coach of the Year, and in 1980, the UPI named him the Wisconsin Girl’s Basketball Coach of the Year. He was the Wisconsin girls all-star game assistant coach in 1983 and 1985, and the head coach in 1986. Coach von Allmen also served on the WBCA Hall of Fame selection committee and the WIAA basketball coaches advisory committee, plus he was the girls all-star game player selection chairperson from 1983 to 1988.
In addition to girls basketball, von Allmen also coached boys basketball (varsity assistant and freshmen), girls track (assistant and head varsity), and girls tennis (freshman).
Coach von Allmen passed away in 2009 at the young age of 65.
