Dick Dvorak
A 6’5” center with a mean hook shot. A lanky right-hander with extraordinary pitching stamina. That’s how people described Dick Dvorak back in high school.
During the school’s 1956 and 1957 inaugural years, Dick led the AHS basketball and baseball teams to many victories. As the starting center, Dick helped the basketball team capture its first two conference titles. He led in scoring, rebounding, and shooting and free throw percentages. He was named the team’s MVP and earned All-Southeastern Conference First-Team honors, along with Waukesha Daily Freeman’s All-County First-Team.
During the spring, Dick led the Warhawk baseball team to a conference title, pitching in every win the team earned along the way. He then topped off his brilliant senior season by pitching the “Arrowhead Nine” to the first-ever state tournament appearance in baseball. Again, he pitched every win along the way, earning him MVP, All-Conference and All-County honors. Along with pitching, Dick was also a dominating hitter for AHS. Many still remember his game-winning home run in a regional victory.
After graduating from Arrowhead’s first graduating class, Dick joined the Army Reserves and was asked to pitch for their baseball team. He also was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. Dick and his wife Carol had three children: Sally, Mary Beth and Jason. He was Grandpa to Derek, Kendra, Nicholas, Johnny and Alana, plus Great Grandpa to Stella.
Dick passed away in 2011. He was 71 years old.
