Marty Barker was a junior in 1957 when Arrowhead was first established. Even though he attended the school for only two years, Marty became known as one of the fiercest competitors in school history. An outstanding four-sport athlete, he excelled at football, basketball, baseball and track.
In 1958, Marty was named All-Waukesha County in football, basketball and baseball.
Baseball
Some might say baseball was Marty’s best sport. He still ranks as one of the best hitters in school history and also was a brilliant catcher. Marty went on to have an outstanding Land O’ Lakes baseball career, winning several league championships. He’s one of the top players in Oconomowoc history and was named to their prestigious Hall of Fame in 1987. In addition to playing for Land O’ Lakes, Marty also coached for the organization.
Football
Marty played quarterback (also known back then as the passer/ball handler) for Coach Sparky Adams’ single wing offense. He became Arrowhead’s first 1,000-yard rusher. On the other side of the ball, he was a solid defensive back.
Basketball
As a junior, Marty started the season as the sixth man, but worked his way into the starting lineup later in the year. In 1958, as a shooting guard, he was the leading scorer of Arrowhead’s team.
After high school, Marty continued playing football at Carroll College. He and his wife Ann (Winger) were married on July 23, 1960. They were happily married until Marty passed away on May 1, 2005 from cancer. Marty is survived by his wife Ann, son Mike, daughters Debbie (Slavin) and Dawn (Behl), grandsons Caleb Slavin and Preston Bakic, Granddaughter Alyssa Slavin, and Great Grandchildren Barron Bakic and Brantley Bakic.
