Fuzzy Marek
He first turned heads — actually gave people whiplash — as a swimmer. Known as the number one age-group swimmer in the United States, Fuzzy Marek began setting records at an early age. More than 25 years later, several of his butterfly state records are still unbeaten, plus he still has butterfly times that are nationally ranked in the Top 10 all-time.
Unfortunately for the swimming world, Fuzzy’s heart was elsewhere and he gave up his swimming career to focus on other sports. At Arrowhead, Fuzzy was a 3-year Varsity athlete, Captain, and All-Conference performer in multiple sports. As the football team's starting quarterback, he led the Arrowhead football team to their first-ever State Championship in 1993 and then again in 1994. With an impeccable record of only one loss over those two seasons, including a 24-game winning streak and the school's first undefeated and nationally ranked team in 1994, Fuzzy was a two-year captain and leader of those teams. He was honored as the Southeast Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 1994, a year in which both State Finalists came from the same powerhouse conference.
As a guard on Arrowhead's Varsity basketball team for three years, Fuzzy was a two-year captain; a First Team All-Conference selection; and leading scorer on the 1994 team. Fuzzy also played three years of Varsity baseball for AHS.
Whether on the baseball diamond, football field or basketball court,
coaches, fellow teammates and fans loved to watch Fuzzy play.
After his Arrowhead career, Fuzzy went on to play quarterback at Division 1-AA Drake University, where he was part of Drake's Conference Championship team in 1998. Unfortunately, he suffered a career-ending shoulder injury as the starting quarterback at the beginning of his junior year.
Today, Fuzzy continues to have an impact at Arrowhead – this time as an active alumni and financial supporter. He and the Marek family were instrumental in the Football Stadium project and the donation of the stadium's scoreboard. Fuzzy is the CEO of The Marek Group, a marketing communications and commercial printing company servicing Fortune 500 companies and other businesses throughout the United States. He is married to high school sweetheart and Arrowhead basketball State Champion (1991) Gretchen Sommerfeldt-Marek. They have four children, ages 13, 11, 9, and 7.
