Advanced Ceramics is a semester long course that elaborates on the many different means of working with clay as an artistic medium. Students will further explore coil building, soft and leather hard slab construction, clay extrusion and various mold-making techniques. Students will also use ceramics as a sculptural material in creating a portrait sculpture. Students will learn a number of different firing and glazing techniques. A development of skills working on the potter's wheel would include bowls, functional vessels and covered containers. Understanding and working with the principles of design will be stressed throughout this course as well as relationships of ceramic forms to historical and cultural periods.
