Bell Schedule
AHS began an exploration into various learning models that best support students several years ago. The examination of the schedule is prompted by a few factors including:
-
Exploration of adding a flex period or resource period for students to connect regularly with teaching staff and counselors, at a time when ALL could be available for academic support.
-
Feedback from some students regarding daily expectations in the current schedule. This feedback came from the Principal's Cabinet as well as advocacy among students over the course of the last few years.
-
Concerns regarding the shorter class periods (40 minutes) in a 10 period day and the impact on learning and development of academic and life skills, especially compared to other districts where students have 50-84 min classes.
-
Higher than average conflict rates in student course selection -- whereas students are not able to take the courses that initially match their academic and career plans and goals. While we explore possible scheduling options, we value that students want to be able to take a variety of courses - so we sought a schedule option that balances the need for exploring many areas of interest and provides students with the instructional minutes and support needed for growth and success.
The committee explored all possible schedule options, weighed the pros and cons of each schedule, and concluded that an A/B Block schedule with a resource period will better suit the learning needs of our students.
The Arrowhead Board of Education reviewed the schedule options at several public meetings (below) and voted for A/B Block with resource period on November 8.
- Curriculum Committee Meetings: April 27, May 25, August 24, September 21 and October 19.
- Board Meetings: June 14, September 13, and October 11
- Board Workshops: July 24 and September 18.
As the district plans forward, updates will be posted to the website and sent to parents.
