Jim Barwick
Jim Barwick is the first baseball player to be named to the Arrowhead Athletic Hall of Fame. He lettered in baseball (1977-1979), basketball (78-79), golf (77-78) and track (79), but baseball earned him the most recognition. Jim was named First-Team All-Conference as both a junior and senior, and then as a senior, he also captured All-Area and All-State honors. For Arrowhead, he was the starting shortstop his sophomore, junior and senior years and helped lead the team to a Conference Championship in 1978 and 1979, and the State title in 1979.
With a hugely successful AHS baseball career, Jim received a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a four-year starter and earned four varsity letters. At Madison, his highlights include:
- Named to the Big 10 All-Freshman team
- Set the school record for highest freshman batting average (.370) – Big 10 leader
- Set Madison’s All-Time Career Records in: games played (190), at bats (662), runs scored (138), plus he finished second all-time in hits (208) and stolen bases (56), finished third in doubles (31) and fourth in triples (13)
- Finished with a career batting average of .342
- Played on the UW team that toured Alaska the summer of his freshman year – played in the Midnight Sun Game
- Played collegiate summer baseball for the Chatham A’s in The Cape Cod League
Post college, Jim played Land O’Lakes baseball for 30 years for Monches, Hartland and Lannon. During that time, he was a 15-time all-star selection. He also played in the Langsdorf baseball league in Milwaukee for 17 years.
Did you know…Jim played a part in the movie “Major League,”
which was filmed at County Stadium in the 1980s.
Jim and his wife Christel have two children — daughter Amy is graduating this spring with her teaching degree, and son Dan plays college baseball for UW-Milwaukee Panthers. Currently, Jim works for Dorner Mfg. Corp. in Hartland as the director of human resources.
