What is Girl Up?
Girl Up is a United Nations sponsored organization that works to fight gender discrimination all over the world. The club organizes awareness, fundraising, and advocacy activities in our community to make sure that all girls — here and around the world — are educated, healthy, safe, counted, and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.
Arrowhead Girl Up’s Actions:
During the school year, we will coordinate with other Girl Up clubs in different countries to host activities together.
Girl Up will focus on the following:
-
Holding fundraisers to support women in developing countries.
-
Volunteering at different women's shelters such as The Milwaukee's Women Center, the Women's Shelter in Waukesha, and The Joy House.
-
Raising awareness by speaking about the issues covered below at middle schools and our own high school.
-
Advocating to change laws that are harmful and to create policies that support girls’ rights or support additional funding for programs that benefit girls in our own community, nationally, and globally.
The Issues Girl Up Covers:
Education:
131 million girls around the world are out of school. Girl Up has fundraised for organizations like UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNHCR to provide refugee and marginalized girls with a safe and proper education. Arrowhead Girl Up plans to raise money for school supplies, tutoring, uniforms, and scholarships for girls around the world so that they can go to school.
Stem:
One in three of all students enrolled in STEM-related fields of study globally are female. Girls Up has trained hundreds of girls from all over the world through STEM camps that provide girls with the opportunity to explore STEM subjects in a safe and supportive environment. Arrowhead Girl Up supports girls in STEM by talking to and encouraging middle school girls to pursue STEM careers.
Health:
Two out of three women globally don’t get the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
Girl Up fund raises to supply girls all over the world with access to doctors. Arrowhead Girl Up will put together period kits and donate money to support Girl Up’s cause. We also plan to educate our school and neighboring schools about girls’ mental and reproductive health.
Leadership:
Globally, women are less likely to hold positions of power and be represented in both politics and the business world. While women make up 50.8% of the United States’ population, only 23.7% of Congress and 26% of the Senate is female; women of color are even less represented. In Arrowhead’s Girl Up, we will be writing to our elected officials in Wisconsin and people in power about what can be done to help change these statistics so that women are more represented and given equal opportunities.
Sports:
Sports gender inequality is a huge issue. The giant pay gap between men’s and women’s sports, fewer opportunities, funding, and leadership positions among women, and sex discrimination in the workplace are some of the biggest culprits. Arrowhead Girl Up will be discussing ways in which we can help girls stay more active in the sports community and why it’s so important that girls are involved and given equal opportunities in the sports world.
Gender Violence:
1 in 3 women will experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. Girl Up has raised and donated money to buy bikes for girls in Africa to make sure they are safe when traveling to school. Arrowhead Girl Up fundraisers help women in need while also educating people about the violence women face, and volunteering at women’s shelters.
