Becky McCaw Hatlestad
Comparing athletes to stars of the past, Becky McCaw Hatlestad is the Mia Hamm of Arrowhead. Becky helped ignite a girls’ soccer movement for the school and helped build the foundation for future success. Moving from Colorado to Hartland as a 7th-grader, Becky brought a new level of girls soccer to the area. She played with such poise, passion and power — and she was a great teammate, inspiring others to push themselves and enjoy on-the-field success.
As a freshman, Becky caught the eye of Arrowhead’s varsity coach Dean Groth and was immediately put into action on the field. As a starter, she helped take Arrowhead girls soccer to a next level, catapulting the high school into its first State tournament. That team also captured the Conference title. Becky was named Second-Team All-Conference as a freshman.
Taking over as center midfielder her sophomore year, Becky once again helped her team compete at a high level. Unfortunately, injuries plagued the team’s results at the end of the season. As an individual that year, Becky was named First-Team All-Conference.
As a junior, Becky led the Warhawks to another Conference title and to its second State tournament where the team lost the Championship game in an overtime shoot-out. Becky was named First-Team All-State, First-Team All-Conference and captured the attention of college recruiters.
In 1988 as a senior and co-captain, Becky severely sprained her ankle early in the season. From the sidelines, she pushed and motivated the team, which took second in the conference, after losing a couple of tight matches early on. After regaining some strength, Becky joined her team in the second half of the season and led them to a third State tournament appearance. Once again, she was named First-Team All-State, First-Team All-Conference.
After gaining All-State honors her junior and senior years, Becky signed with UW-Milwaukee to play collegiate soccer.
