Al Vandertie
Living, breathing and promoting AHS athletics, Al Vandertie was often called the “Father of Arrowhead” where he taught physical education, biology and business; and he also served at various times as a coach, athletic director, principal, interim district administrator and assistant district administrator.
As Arrowhead’s first varsity basketball coach, Coach Vandertie put together an impressive 147-77 record during 12 seasons. His team was Conference champions in 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1966.
Other AHS highlights include:
- started the area’s grade school basketball program
- also coached baseball (Conference champions and WIAA State Tournament appearance in 1956), football and golf
- served as an advisor to the Lettermen’s Club, Varsity Club, Yearbook and intramural athletic program
- concepted and designed the two-building campus approach at Arrowhead and foresaw the need to acquire additional land to expand facilities and sports fields
- the Al Vandertie Memorial Basketball Golf Outing/Scholarship is named after Coach Vandertie
Prior to AHS, Coach Vandertie was a four-year letter winner in basketball at St. Norbert College. He also served as a Captain in the US Marine Corps and was married to his wife Barb for many beautiful years, before he passed away in 2005.
