Dave Balmer
Many would say Dave Balmer laid the foundation for one of the most successful high school sports programs in Wisconsin. Dave started at Arrowhead in 1961 as a football coach, winning three conference titles, before taking the reigns as the athletic director. In that role, Dave:
- put together the strategy for the AHS athletic complex that exists today, (football field, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and the track)
- championed girls athletics (introducing several girls’ sports to AHS, setting up a coaching staff, finding qualified officials, securing uniforms and equipment, etc.)
A huge promoter of AHS athletics, Dave was active in the WIAA, WADA, NIAAA, AHS Booster Club, Friends and Families of Arrowhead, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Young Life.
Other highlights include:
- 1978-79 Wisconsin Athletic Director of the Year
- 1977 Educator of the Year (taught history and Phy. Ed)
- 1967 Wisconsin Coaches Association Certificate of Merit
- Founded Arrowhead’s Open Golf Outing now known as the Balmer Golf Outing (AGO)
Dave is no stranger to Hall of Fame status as he was previously inducted into UW-Whitewater’s Hall of Fame where he played football and baseball. Dave also served in the US Army.
Following Dave’s death in 1994, the David P. Balmer Athletic scholarship was established in his memory.
