Liesl (Schultz)
In 1991, the Arrowhead girls basketball team won its second State Championship. Liesl Schultz led the way, dominating on both sides of the court. In the three State games she played, Liesl set a tournament record, sinking 70% of her shots. She also tallied a couple double-doubles, leading the way with scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.
At 6’5”, Liesl would wreak havoc on opposing offenses with her agility, size and shot-blocking ability. She averaged 9 blocks per game and is the best shot blocker in school history.
“I am so thankful and grateful for the opportunities basketball has given me
throughout my life. Arrowhead, and especially Coach Pete von Allmen and my teammates, were and are a huge part of my life, on and off the court,” said Liesl.
Liesl was captain of the team her senior year, plus was named All-State and All-Conference. She played in the State tournament three years in a row, during her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Liesl also made the varsity tennis team her senior year.
Liesl received a scholarship to play basketball at Division 1 Butler University, where she was named MVP and All-League twice, and co-captain her senior year. That year, she also led the NCAA in Blocked Shots (103). Liesl also holds the Butler record for Most Career Blocked Shots at 254.
Post college, Liesl went on to play two years of professional basketball in Europe, and was on the Austrian National Champion team in 1996. After that experience, Liesl coached at the collegiate level for five years before joining the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center as an environmental educator.
